IVANOREVAN is an independent artist and songwriter from Malaysia, building his musical journey from the ground up. Driven by a desire to explore less-traveled artistic territory, he approaches lyricism and composition through his own distinct perspective.
His warm, raspy vocal tone brings a subtle shimmer and distinctive contrast to his music, while his love for the unexpected inspires him to merge neoclassical arrangements with modern melodies and ethnic instruments from different roots. Through cinematic soundscapes, emotional storytelling, and unconventional ideas, he creates works that invite listeners to feel, reflect, and discover something beyond the familiar.
Journey
Born with a visual condition, IVANOREVAN grew up with a profound awareness of how differently he experienced the world. With the unwavering support of his family, he underwent years of training and treatment in the hope of seeing more of the world. Those experiences shaped not only the way he remembered the world, but also how he sees it.
Growing up feeling different from those around him, he experienced moments of judgement, unfamiliar stares, and the feeling of never quite fitting into a particular circle. Rather than seeing these experiences as something separate from his journey, he came to embrace them as part of it. His perspective became a palette of sorrows.
Growing up in Malaysia, a country rich in diverse ethnic traditions, he developed a deep appreciation for the colours and character of ethnic music. To him, these traditions represent more than musical influences; they are part of the roots, stories, and 'humanness'. He carries this appreciation into his own compositions, weaving elements of different musical traditions into his work.
Classical music also became an important part of his artistic language. Although he did not have the opportunity to formally study classical music while growing up, he was surrounded by people who played it. He was drawn to its beauty and mystery, and especially to its ability to communicate without words, being heard and understood through emotion alone.
His experience as a lounge singer later gave him the opportunity to perform the songs of others. While he found joy in singing them, he eventually realised that the stories belonged to someone else. He wanted to tell stories that came directly from his own heart. That realisation led him to songwriting.
For IVANOREVAN, songwriting became a way of giving sound to what words cannot always express. Emotions that cannot be spoken directly can instead become melodies, harmonies, textures, and silence. His music draws from the emotional weight of neoclassical writing, the colours of ethnic traditions, and modern musical ideas, creating a space where contrasts can coexist. He hopes to compose what he calls the“genre of lives”, music born from lived experiences, voices buried deep within, and stories from overlooked corners of the world.
His artistry is ultimately an invitation to listen to his own story, and also to the stories that often remained unheard.
